effectively and efficiently evaluating trends in groundwater quality
Central Valley Groundwater Monitoring Collaborative
What is the CVGMC?
The Central Valley Groundwater Monitoring Collaborative (CVGMC) is a group of agricultural coalitions and other stakeholders across the Central Valley working collaboratively under a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) to protect groundwater quality.
The CVGMC was created to comply with the various Waste Discharge Requirements of the participating Central Valley Irrigated Lands Regulatory Program (ILRP) agricultural coalitions, including monitoring and characterizing regional groundwater quality conditions and trends.
Why did the CVGMC form?
Challenges of Individual Monitoring and Reporting
- Local scale groundwater quality characterization hinders useful trend analyses
- Burden lies on individual permittees to compile and analyze groundwater quality data
- Difficulties complying with monitoring requirements of multiple state and local concurrent regulatory programs
- Little knowledge gained regarding land use and management practices related to regional groundwater quality conditions and trends
Benefits to
Collaborating
- Regional groundwater quality characterization allows for robust trend analyses
- More efficient and cost-effective compiling, organizing, analyzing, and sharing of regional data and results
-
Streamlined regulatory reporting through coordinated preparation of required submittals
- Long-term benefit to collaborators through a better understanding of factors that influence the effectiveness of management actions on groundwater quality

The CVGMC Data Management System
The CVGMC’s Data Management System (DMS) serves as a central repository of information managed in a consistent format.
By banding together and utilizing one DMS, CVGMC participants can benefit from increased efficiency in data processing and reporting both internally and externally. The DMS encourages standardized data collection which allows for more rigorous analyses to identify groundwater trends on a large scale. In addition, the DMS is built on a secure platform allowing for password protected access with the goal of building online tools for CVGMC participants in the future.
Five-Year Assessment Report
The Central Valley Groundwater Monitoring Collaborative (CVGMC) is pleased to announce the November 30 submittal of its first Five-Year Assessment Report. This major collaborative effort is a landmark document that fulfills the Irrigated Lands Regulatory Program (ILRP) reporting requirements set by the Regional Water Quality Control Board for ten agricultural coalitions in the Central Valley. This comprehensive Five-Year Assessment Report focuses on nitrate occurrence, distribution, and trends in groundwater for nearly all of the San Joaquin Valley.
